As we are in our fifth year of existence, we are looking forward. We are renewing our Charter, we are building a new school and we are moving forward with innovative programs and curriculum. McCurdy Charter has a unique place in the valley, bridging tradition with the new. Thank you for joining us on this endeavor, we look forward to many successful years in the beautiful Espanola valley.Kiva Duckworth-Moulton, Principal
McCurdy Elementary is housed in Hovermale Building, in two portable buildings, and our sixth graders are currently in Pringle Building. We have two classrooms for each grade level, a teacher in each classroom. Our teaching staff also includes an art teacher, two kindergarten educational assistants, a teacher of the Gifted, a Title I assistant, a Special Education teacher and assistant. Our teachers are all highly qualified and our staff includes Level II and Level III teachers. Our curriculum combines the framework of Core Knowledge with the Common Core. Our students are able to utilize the use of a computer lab for research as well as several highly regarded intervention programs (First in Math, Renaissance Learning, Achieve3000).
As part of our charter, students are encouraged to participate in service learning projects throughout the year. Projects that students have worked on include raising money for Heifer International, the Heart Association, and Earth’s Birthday Project. They have written cards for Blue Star Mothers, collected food for the hungry, cleaned the campus, performed for volunteers and schoolmates and generally worked for the good of the community. It is a treasured part of our year. Volunteerism is a required part of school enrollment and parents and family members have contributed hundreds of hours in and out of the classroom. It makes an amazing difference. We are very proud of our little charter school.
